[How my Psychology Class helped me in my career]

Unlike most everyone else, I didn't go to college to get a job (much to the chagrin of my Parents.) I went to a private liberal arts college where I had intended to major in music. A liberal arts college and education in general allows you to communicate and connect with other people (in a limited way) in their area of expertise. You learn about different subjects and can then converse semi-intelligently with a whole new array of people. I really enjoyed my Psychology class. I had come to learn, and that's what I determined to do!

I can't get enough of life-long learning, so I've created several interrelated businesses that create and offer learning resources via audio books and other multi-media formats. I learned how to speak Spanish via audio books during my drives to and from work and dropping off kids. That's also how I learned marketing and publicity, and a host of other topics to enhance my business. Learning doesn't have to stop just because you're not school age.

Most of all, what I found to be true is that education, in it's truest form, exposes you to new ideas that would not have come to you naturally. That's because everyone is different. We process ideas and thoughts differently, and we all filter information that we receive in different ways, and we have all had different experiences, which alters our view of life. That's why we need access to a community of resource people who are more adept in areas where we struggle, and who can see to the core of our problem and quickly produce a solution. Adult Education, whether formally through college classes, or informally through audio book classes, teleclasses, books and seminars, exposes you to others who not only may know more about subjects you need to learn, but also who can see you and your business in a unique and enlightening way.

The one thing I liked about philosophy classes is that they taught me to "think" like someone else to follow their thought processes. An idea that totally transformed my understanding of the world and other people is that everyone filters information differently. It's like everyone's brain is a sieve with different shapes (remember the game perfection?) and my brain filters in stars and squares, but your brain may filter in circles and crescents...it's a limited visual picture of what I'm trying to portray, but until that point I thought everyone thought like me. How naive! But this explained much of the conflict and struggles in communications I had witnessed and experienced up to that point.

Beware, though. Life-long learning can be addicting. Once you understand how much you don't know, it can also be overwhelming, but as my close friend and mentor always say..."How do you eat an elephant? One spoonful at a time." But don't be daunted there is a whole world of information at your fingertips, waiting to transform your life into what you always wanted it to be.
